Beginning to End” is the first novel I’ve read by Paul Hughes, but I really hope it won’t be the last! I thought it to be very good—excellent writing and a compelling, unpredictable plot set against an intriguing international background. I like the fact that it is a fully-realized crime thriller without all the bloat that can sometimes weigh down an action-packed book like this one. Hughes fills you in as we go without getting bogged down in describing every last thing, but at the same time the detailing in to the police/detective network is quite impressive. The story moves forward and you can’t help but get sucked into Hughes’ strong narrative. And I haven’t even begun to talk about the characters, which were authentic and move the story forward nicely. Devlin and Spearing are the type of leads we like to root for (at least at first!!), and I enjoyed watching their dynamic with the other characters/ develop over the course of the action. Some similar themes and motifs found in typical crime/thriller/suspense lore, but Paul Hughes does a fantastic job of putting his own unique spin on them. The ending is one that will make you want to read more ASAP! Recommend for mature fans of crime/thrillers.
